Employment

This section presents various projects and schemes that aim to facilitate progress into paid employment. It is divided into two sections, covering employment within the sector, that deals with employing ex-service users, and also in facilitating routes into employment with other services, and also work outside the sector, which covers getting into paid employment in a variety of careers and professions.

Pre-employability

Assessing a person's work-readiness is no easy task. Being ready for work depends on a wide range of factors, and will take time to assess thoroughly.

Assessment

OSW has developed The Employability Map,a comprehensive soft outcomes assessment tool supported by specific training on how to use the tool with clients.

  • Download a sample Skills assessment template, such as this one used by Reignite in Medway. This tool is a very useful guide to preparing for job applications as it encourages the client to reflect on specific examples in their experience where they demonstrate particular skills.

Other tools that are widely available can be used to encourage consideration and reflection on work skills - such as the various Strengths Finder tools, which have related websites that can be accessed in conjunction with buying the book. Phase One in Brighton, run by BHT, makes use of this tool in its resettlement programme.

  • Various careers explorer tools are also available on the web, an example is this Careers Explorer by Kent University.

Employment programmes

This section gives case study examples of a range of employment initiatives, many on the social enterprise model that can provide a stable initial employment option for homeless people.

Work within the sector

This section covers all aspects of employing former service users within homelessness and support agencies.

Work outside the sector

This section presents a range of projects that aim to assist people into paid employment in the career or field of their choosing, including several of the Equal TMD London projects.
