Operational guidelines

This page is a brief summary of practices that frontline outreach staff should consider before commencing each outreach shift

Ensure partner is present – essential for any outreach work.

What to carry

  • Street Outreach service identification (preferably not in a wallet or purse)
  • Zipped bag to hold items
  • At least one torch
  • Mobile phone
  • Notebook
  • Pens
  • Alarm (if appropriate)
  • Map
  • Your agency details/cards
  • Telephone numbers of agencies (e.g. day centres, drop-in services)
  • Details of hostel vacancies/reserved spaces
  • Incentives (e.g. blankets, cups of tea, cigarettes) - in line with service policies
  • Recording/monitoring forms
  • Small amounts of money (telephone, escorts and beverages for client)

Health and Safety

  • Speak with partner prior to leaving about working practices (e.g. signal word, preferred method of engagement).

  • Complete log-in book when leaving and returning.

  • Plan a route or area that you will be working in

  • (If appropriate) contact police to inform them of the location you will be working in.

  • Liase with building managers (e.g. car park managers) to say you will be present.

  • Fill out the incident book and/or speak with your line manager if necessary.
